Lakefront Marathon Recap+Weekend Fun

Hey friends! I hope you are all having a great start to your week!

As promised in my Friday Favorites post from Friday.  Here is a marathon recap from the marathon I ran this past Sunday {plus some weekend fun}!

Lakefront Marathon Recap

5:15 am – Woke up and got ready.

5:45 am – Ate some oatmeal for breakfast and sipped on a cup of coffee. Plus drank a bunch of water.

6:45 am – Left the apartment with Aaron’s parents to get to the start line.

7:00 am – Arrived at the race location, warmed up a little, stood in a long bathroom line.

7:15 am – Didn’t get to use the bathroom because had to get a team picture for our marathon team! Cue – freak out because I really had to use the restroom!

7:20 – Found a hidden bathroom where the line wasn’t long and finally got a chance to go, just before race started. Phew! That was really cutting it close.

7:30 – Race started and we were off! P.S. my GPS almost didn’t get a signal.  It found the satellite just in time! Another close call.

Overall I felt really great the first half of the race and thought it was going to be a great race.  I was holding a consistent pace until about mile 16.  I laid off the quicker pace just so I could save some of my energy. By this point I also had a blister that hurt and was stinging extremely bad.

I made the mistake of not taking the power gel that they were offering at about mile 8.  I grabbed one, but did not ingest it.  I was only drinking gatorade and water at every water stop.  Which has worked for me in the past. But the gatorade the volunteers were handing out was very watered down.

Around mile 17 or 18 I ate my energy gummies to get some sugar in my system but at that point it was too late.  At mile 20 I hit the wall and I knew it was bad.  I thought I was going to end up walking the last 6.2 miles.  At that point I decided to put some headphones on and listen to some Taylor Swift to try to get me pepped and energetic. It helped a little. From mile 20-23 it was a run/walk/run/walk on and off.

At mile 24 I was running besides a fellow runner about my age and I could tell she was struggling more than I was. I asked if she wanted to push each other to the finish. She agreed and we ran together.

She helped me through the next 1.5 miles and I never got to thank her for that. By mile 25.5 I was feeling better and she was still struggling, so she told me to go ahead and assured me that she would be fine with only 0.70 miles left.  She was my saving grace that last part of the race and I don’t think I would have been able to run that portion if she hadn’t been there helping me.

I ended up running across the finish line in 3:57, which isn’t a PR, but I suppose is pretty dang good for having to walk. I felt very lightheaded and dizzy after crossing the finish line and it was the worst I’ve felt after a marathon. Poor nutrition and going out too fast is not good. Lesson learned.

Anyways, I’m honestly not happy about the race. I was really mad the rest of the day. I know it’s great to finish a marathon, but it wasn’t good enough for me. And that’s not a healthy way to think.  I should be happy about finishing a marathon.

I’m trying to stay positive about it though.  In the words of Albert Einstein;

“Failure is success in progress.”

Completing a marathon isn’t a fail…it’s definitely a success. I didn’t meet my personal goal, so this race counted towards that success in progress, right? Right. And I learned from my nutrition mistake and maybe need to tweak my training for the next one. 🙂

Marathon Finish

P.S. I just looked at my race photos and I am smiling in the majority of them, which really surprised me based on how much I struggled, haha!

Weekend Fun

Enough about the marathon.  We went apple picking this weekend and it was so fun! Definitely a lot less stressful than running a marathon.
