New Focus: Strength and Stretching

Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone is having a great week! I’m not going to lie, this week has been pretty slow for me so far.  I got sick earlier this week and it’s just basically been painful until about today. Thank God for antibiotics and doctors!

Anyways, I just wanted to talk to you guys about what I want my new “focus” to be in my fitness and overall health.

I have always been so inconsistent with strength training.  I don’t know why. I’ve just kind of always been a cardio/running queen.

Maybe because getting out to run is easier that going to the gym? Or because I’m a creature of habit? Probably both, ha!

Anyway, I really really want to focus more on strength training/weight lifting and stretching/flexibility.  No, I don’t want to get bulky, I just want to have more lean muscle.  AND there are a ton of benefits that come with weight lifting and strength training. And, I’m just a very inflexible and stiff person, so yeah, I need to fix that.

Some of the benefits of strength training and weight lifting include:

  • Gaining strength (duh 😉 )
  • Losing body fat (who doesn’t want that?!)
  • Good for bone health (decreases risk of Osteoporosis)
  • Reduces risk of injury (HUGE plus for us runners!)
  • Burns more calories (muscle burns more calories than fat)
  • Improves posture and can reduce back pain (9-5 desk job…can I get a holla!?)
  • Enhances mood and reduces stress (seems like a no brainer)
  • Increases energy (I’m all about saving my coffee money! 😉 )

So many great benefits, right?! Right! 👌

So, strength training and stretching are going to be a major focus this fall and winter. I actually did some strength training this morning and I felt GREAT afterwards.  I always do! And, I think now that I’m not training for a marathon, it will be easier to focus on weights and strength. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to keep up with running, because cardio is great too!

My question for you, is do you have any good exercise/weight regime that you use to really amp up your fitness? I have ideas and certain movements I learned from when I did CrossFit this past winter. But I’m definitely open to what other people do and recommend/enjoy.
